The 3rd Piece

How to elevate your style.

Do you ever wonder why some people just have that head-turning put together look? I am not talking about the over the top kind of tacky, I can’t look away look. I mean a look that is cool yet elegant at the same time, not flashy, but stands out. How do you achieve that look?

Consider the 3rd piece. What is the 3rd piece? It’s simple, it is that one final touch that pulls the outfit together. It is not just throwing on bottoms and a top and heading out the door, it is that single piece that completes the outfit.

There are 4 different 3rd pieces that should be in every wardrobe.

  1. Black blazer
  2. Denim jacket
  3. Tailored vest
  4. Leather jacket

Let’s go through each one. Black blazer can turn a simple pants and top into a pulled together ready for business look. Pair the black blazer with jeans and a simple shirt, and you are ready for anything. Make sure to go with a lined blazer, since they hold their shape better. Spend a little extra for good tailoring and craftmanship. Go with hip length or longer to elongate and slim your look.

Denim jacket. Cute, casual, fun. Word of caution – unless you want the Brittney and Justin era all over denim look – don’t pair it with jeans. Save the jeans for other things. Pair it with white jeans or pants, khaki pants, even some black pants. Wear a denim jacket over a dress, like a flowy dress or skirt. If going with a dress, consider a belt for definition.

Tailored vest. Long or short, solid or patterned. A vest can add a pop of color or pattern under a blazer. A vest can top off an outfit. Consider the silhouette. If wearing wide pants or skirts- go with a shorter fitted vest. If wearing narrow bottoms or shorter dress or skirt (even shorts), consider a longer vest. Vests are not limited by color or pattern.

Leather jacket. A black leather jacket is iconic cool. A leather jacket can be paired with anything, and by anything I mean jeans, pants, skirts, dresses. A leather jacket can add a little edge to an ultra feminine outfit, be the finishings piece to jeans and t-shirts, and so much more. For the most versatility, a leather jacket should be waist-length. Zippers and rivets add to the edgy feel. There are some good faux leather choices if wearing animal skins is not your thing.

I hope you enjoy trying different looks with the 3rd piece. Let me know in the comments what you think or it you have any favorite looks you would like to share. Until next time sending light and love to you all!
